Chuma Sijeqa - Baritone

Welcome to my Website
I am passionate about bringing characters to life on stage, whether through the intensity of dramatic roles or the light-heartedness of comedy.
I have a particular fondness for Verdi operas, where music and drama blend seamlessly, allowing me to truly connect with the emotions of each character. Performing these roles feels natural and rewarding, but I also enjoy exploring other genres and styles - they help me grow as a versatile performer and keep every experience fresh.
About Chuma Sijeqa
Chuma was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is proud to be an alumnus of both the Les Azuriales and Jette Parker Artist Programmes. His formal training began in the Vocal Arts Department at Tshwane University of Technology, where he studied under Pierre du Toit. After completing postgraduate studies, He joined Gauteng Opera in 2017, performing in a wide variety of productions and events, including roles such as Gasparo in Donizetti’s Rita and Schaunard in La bohème.
In 2018, Chuma was honoured with Second Prize in the Voices of South Africa International Singing Competition. As part of this achievement, He participated in the Les Azuriales Opera Festival in Nice, performing the role of Monsieur Presto in Poulenc's Les mamelles de Tirésias. That same festival brought further recognition when he was awarded the Joseph Karaviotis Prize in the vocal competition. He also joined the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme as a Link Artist, opening up new opportunities for growth and performance.

The following year, Chuma took part in The New Generation Festival, performing as Don Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro. He then furthered studies at the Guildhall School of Music, completing an artist master’s degree under the vocal guidance of Gary Coward. His journey continued with Pegasus Opera’s double bill, singing the Father in Debussy’s The Prodigal Son and the Landlord in Bernard Shaw’s Passion, Poison and Petrification.

Chuma's career has since included a range of exciting roles and collaborations. He performed as Harašta in The Cunning Little Vixen at Opera Holland Park, and joined the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme 20th Anniversary Company, taking on roles such as Angelotti in Tosca, Second Philistine in Samson et Dalila, and Second Nazarine in Salome on the Royal Opera House main stage. He also appeared as the Speaker in Die Zauberflöte for Welsh National Opera, and returned to the Royal Opera House to perform in a children’s opera at the Linbury Theatre, playing the Woodcutter and Archivist in The Sapling. Additionally, He worked with OperaUpClose, taking on the role of Mr Bear in Jonathan Briggin's Peace at Last.

Recently, Chuma has been involved in Opera Glass Works’ film production of La traviata as the Doctor, and performed as Franz in Marx in London with Scottish Opera. Other recent roles include Clistene in Vivaldi's L’Olimpiade with Irish National Opera, Polyphemus in Acis and Galatea, and Marchese in La traviata, both with Opera Holland Park. He also played the Police Sergeant in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Proms with English National Opera and the BBC.

Looking ahead, Chuma is excited to take on the role of Barone in La traviata with Garsington Opera.

Chuma Sijeqa admirably captures the vulnerability beneath Clistene’s bravado
The Guardian, 14 May 2024
Chuma Sijeqa was a suitably robust presence as King Clistine. His rich baritone voice was clear and resonant and was accompanied by a strong stage presence.
Operakey.com, 23 May 2024
Chuma Sijeqa’s very deep bass voice makes Polyphemus seem seductive even though he’s really a rapist trying to steal another male’s female. His low notes are suitably menacing and his higher ones almost plaintive. It’s a well balanced take on character who is actually a lonely outcast
Susan Elkin, July 2024
Chuma Sijeqa’s Polyphemus dominates the stage with his presence whenever he is on and has a deep, majestic bass that hooks from the start.
Broadway World UK, 21 July 2025
Bass Chuma Sijeqa has both the voice and the acting skills to enforce the contrast between him and the other characters. He also manages well the contrast between the opera’s most famous aria, O ruddier than the cherry, and the powerful recitative which precedes it, I rage, I melt, I burn.
The Reviews Hub, 28 July 2024
Sijeqa’s ‘I rage … O ruddier than the cherry’ was an evening high point, his voice strong and clear, his dramatic take firm.
Opera Today, July 2024
South African Jette Parker Company Artist Chuma Sijeqa, too, meshed fine acting with a strong baritone voice as Cesare Angelotti. Sijega is one to watch – he returns as Second Philistine in Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila later in the season. He was every inch the equal of the excellent Yuriy Yurhuk in the December run
Opera Today, 9 Feb 2022
Zwakele Tshabalala and Chuma Sijeqa provided sterling support as Gastone and Marchese d’Obigny though the production gave us no help at differentiating them
Planet Hugill, 23 July 2025
Alaric Green was rather underused as the steward, whilst Chuma Sijeqa played the comic police sergeant with G&S relish
Planet Hugill, 1 September 2025
The highlight of the first half, and of the entire evening, was the Act Two Quartet from Verdi’s Luisa Miller, with Msabane Cecilia Rangwanasha in the title role, Nikolaieva as Federica, Blaise Malaba as Walter and Chuma Sijeqa as Wurm. To have Pappano in Verdi, the composer he surely is at his greatest, is a treat for both audience and singers (in spite of the fact that there is a long passage of the four singers minus orchestra – how accurate was the return of the orchestra, and how well the singers kept pitch).
